Thyroid Association with Hair LossHair loss and thyroid disease do they have any connection? Well as you know that thyroid is a gland which located in the lower part of the neck. Thyroid is the largest endocrine gland in the human body. It is known as the Adam's apple in men. This gland produces hormones called Triodothyronine (t3) and thyroxin (t4). These two hormones help in the metabolic activities of the body. And the thyroid glands are controlled by the hypothalamus and pituitary. These two hormones are related to the two diseases of the thyroid glands and are relevant to your hair loss problem. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are conditions that are found mostly in women as this is due to the enlargement of the thyroid glands which can be found in the hair loss problem. Hyperthyroidism is more common and is called as Grave's disease which results in the excessive production of the thyroid hormone due to enlarged thyroid glands. This disease is found to affect women who are in their early twenties and thirties. In hypothyroidism there is no sufficient production of this hormone and is called as Hashimoto's disease, antibodies attack the thyroid glands destroying the glands and prevents from producing thyroid hormones. Causes of thyroid:The signs for both hyperthyroidism as well as hypothyroidism are almost similar though there are some differences. If you suffer from hyperthyroidism than you may have loose bowel movement while in case of hypothyroidism leads to constipation problems. Hyperthyroidism can tolerate heat while hypothyroidism people are more tolerant to cold. But then the major symptom common to both is that you loss hair. Hyperthyroidism leads to weight gain or loss, excessive perspiration, fatigue, swelling in the leg, emotional changes and oily skin are the most prominent symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Symptoms found commonly in hypothyroidism are that there is weight gain, people suffering from hypothyroidism go into depression quite often, there are swellings on the eyelids, hands and legs their skin tend to dry up faster and they complain of muscle pain. Studies show that there are millions of people in America who suffer from thyroid affected disease. As hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are autoimmune diseases they bring about changes in the natural body production between tissues, glands and organs. Antibodies destroy the thyroid glands secretion and make them overly productive. The chances of attracting autoimmune disease are always a risk factor when you are suffering from thyroid. Triodothyronine and thyroxin hormones produced by the thyroid glands help generate energy in the body. Goiter is associated with hyperthyroidism as there is a distinct enlargement of the thyroid gland and because of this enlargement the neck which includes the trachea and the esophagus makes breathing and swallowing difficult. It has been found that sometimes goiters grow into the chest causing more serious problems. Due to the malfunctioning of the thyroid glands can sometimes lead to thyroid cancer. Use of thyroid hormones help restore the normal functioning of the thyroid glands and the metabolic activities of the thyroid glands. ![]() |
